Pre-Operative Assessment Call

What to Expect During Your Pre-Operative Assessment Call

Your pre-operative assessment call is an important part of preparing for your surgery. You will be contacted 7 to 14 days before surgery by a member of our nursing team. During this call, we will review your medical history, medications, allergies, and any special health concerns to help ensure you are safely prepared for your procedure. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and receive important instructions before the day of surgery.

Please answer your phone when our team calls for your pre-operative assessment. If we are unable to reach you, we will leave a detailed voicemail with instructions for returning our call. It is important that you contact us as soon as possible. If we are unable to complete your pre-operative assessment before your scheduled procedure, your surgery may be delayed, postponed, or canceled until the assessment has been completed.

During your call, we will:

  • Verify your name and date of birth
  • Confirm your procedure, surgeon, and surgery date.
  • Review your medical history, including any chronic medical conditions and previous surgeries.
  • Review your current medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products.
  • Discuss any allergies or previous reactions to medications or anesthesia.
  • Discuss when to stop eating and drinking.
  • Discuss which medications you should take or hold leading up to your surgery.
  • Review your transportation arrangements and discharge requirements.
  • Answer any questions you may have about your upcoming procedure.

How to Prepare for the Call

To help make your assessment as efficient as possible, please have the following available:

  • A current list of your medications (including dosages)
  • A list of your medical conditions and previous surgeries

What happens after my call

Following your pre-operative assessment call, a member of our anesthesia team will carefully review your medical history, current medications, and nursing assessment to determine if any additional pre-operative testing or clearances are needed to help ensure you are safely prepared for your procedure. The type of testing required depends on several factors, including your age, medical history, current health conditions, and the type of procedure you are having.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include laboratory testing, an electrocardiogram (EKG), imaging studies (such as X-rays), or medical clearance from your primary care provider or a specialist.

If additional testing or clearances are required, our nursing team will notify your surgeon’s scheduling office. Your surgeon’s scheduler will then contact you and provide the necessary orders and instructions for completing the requested testing.

Please complete any requested testing or medical clearances as soon as possible. Delays in obtaining the required information may result in your procedure being postponed or rescheduled until we have received and reviewed the necessary results. This helps ensure your safety and allows us to provide the highest quality of care.
