What to Expect in Operating Room (OR)
When it is time for your procedure, a member of our surgical team will escort you from the pre-operative area to the operating room. Our team will be with you every step of the way to ensure your safety and comfort.
During your time in the operating room, you can expect the following:
- You will be welcomed by your surgical team, which may include your surgeon, anesthesiologist or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), operating room nurse, and surgical technologist.
- You will be assisted onto the operating room table and positioned carefully for your procedure. Special padding and positioning devices will be used to help keep you safe and comfortable.
- Monitoring equipment will be placed to continuously monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen level, breathing, and other vital signs throughout your procedure.
- Your identity, procedure, and surgical site will be verified as part of our safety protocols before surgery begins. This “time-out” is performed by the entire surgical team to ensure the correct patient, procedure, and surgical site.
- Your anesthesia provider will administer your anesthesia and remain with you throughout your procedure, continuously monitoring your condition and adjusting medications as needed.
- The surgical team will clean the surgical site with a special antiseptic solution to help reduce the risk of infection. Sterile drapes will then be placed around the surgical area.
- Your procedure will begin once all safety checks have been completed and you are comfortable under the appropriate level of anesthesia.
- Your vital signs and overall condition will be closely monitored throughout your procedure by your anesthesia provider and surgical team.
- Once your procedure is complete, your anesthesia provider will begin waking you and you will be transferred to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
